It is widely recommend to track crypto transactions as they occur. Aside from helping you keep tabs on the value of your investments at any given moment, you’ll need detailed information of your cost basis to understand gains/losses when tax time rolls around! Yes, according to current tax laws in several countries crypto currency gains are taxable. The extent/rules of taxation vary per locale, so consult financial/tax experts to understand implications specific to your situation.
Luckily, there is a growing list of portfolio and transaction trackers on the market – mobile and desktop based, free and paid, for individuals and for businesses. Check out the options and select the one that works for you.
Some exchanges and portfolios allow the export of your full transaction history, which is very helpful, and others such as Coinbase will also generate reports to help with tax prep – read the qualifications/clarifications/disclaimers on each site or exchange to understand the information contained in their log, report, etc. so you use the information correctly. Also note that some exchanges will only store recent transactions (i.e. 90-days), so you will need to manually enter older transactions.
Here are my top selections:
Crypto Pro – Available for iOS, download it from the App Store. Crypto Pro is fairly feature packed, including auto-import of data from exchanges and wallets and export of portfolio data to .csv format. It also includes the option to backup/sync to the cloud or Dropbox, has a great Apple Watch complication for quick price checks, includes custom alerts, the option to track multiple portfolios, and a convenient built in news section. The Crypto Pro app is a solid option, even without the premium functions. I’ve experienced a problem for some time now with the app pulling an inaccurate current value of the selected coin when entering a trade – not a dealbreaker, but can cause issues if you forget to double check and correct that value. I’m hopeful the developer will get this pricing glitch resolved
Delta – Available for iOS, MacOS, and Android. A robust portfolio manager with auto-import of data from up to (2) exchanges and (2) wallets in the free version. The paid version, using either the monthly or yearly subscription model, provides some great additional features, charts, and analytics as well as unlimited exchange and wallet attachments via API. The additional features in the Pro version are great, especially the portfolio analytics. The desktop version has an option to export portfolio data to .csv format
